In a match that followed a very similar path to their fourth-round matchup at the 2009 US Open, Caroline Wozniacki defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in a three-set match, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of this year’s Open.
As always, Wozniacki did it with consistency. Kuznetsova had more winners, 40-20, but Caroline made only 10 unforced errors over the final two sets, compared to 47 over that span for Kuznetsova. Conditioning also may have played a factor in the later sets, as Sveta seemed to wear down a bit, losing some of the power and control over her shots that had allowed her to dictate the match early on. Wozniacki, on the other hand, didn’t appear to break a sweat.
Caroline’s struggles to win a major, despite being ranked as the tour’s top player, have caused many to call the WTA rankings system into question; the issue of having a No. 1 who hasn’t won a major has been a hot topic in tennis since her ascension to the top. However, Wozniacki has repeatedly stated that she isn’t bothered by the criticism due to her lack of a major victory or the pressure that comes with being ranked No. 1.
Still, it’d be nice to see her finally step up big in a major. She hasn’t reached the finals in a Grand Slam since the US Open two years ago—her only career major final — and exited early at the French and Wimbledon earlier this year (third- and fourth-round finishes, respectively).
Her opponent in the quarters will be 10th-seeded Andrea Petkovic. The women have split their two career meetings, and haven’t faced off yet this year. Unlike Wozniacki, Petkovic has had a relatively easy tournament so far, dropping only one set in the first four rounds. The players will face off on Wednesday, as Caroline looks to reach her third straight US Open semifinal.
